The main message of the program is “Suicide is preventable”.
The Gatekeeper training program is conducted to understand the importance of Suicide facts and
prevention and equipped with skills to identify and prevent Suicide. The aim of the program is
to train a person who identifies another person who is at risk of suicide and refers them to
treatment or support services as appropriate. Students, teachers and staff members were invited
to participate.
Some of them were strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide,
were invited.
1. Understanding the current facts about Suicide and developing awareness about the prevalence of
it.
2. Busting myths and misconceptions about Suicide. (10 specific misconceptions and their major
negative consequences are discussed and readdressed with the actual facts).
3. To understand the warning signs of Suicide. (The verbal, emotional, social, and behavioural
cues are discussed, and awareness about suicide communication events (SCE)).
4. To educate on how to conduct a preliminary risk assessment for an individual and identify the
level of risk in terms of mild, moderate, or high.
5. Once the risk assessment is done and the level of risk is identified, introduce the 3-step
intervention - QPR (Question-persuade-Refer) technique and train via a specific QPR
method.
6. Emergency crisis intervention techniques will be introduced to deal with individuals in need
of immediate help.
7. Other Universally accepted intervention techniques will also be introduced and trained.
The duration of the program was 3 hours. The training program will be offered to different batches of students, teachers and staff members.
